Idris Elba’s DJ sitcom Turn Up Charlie is ‘axed’ by Netflix after just one series

Idris Elba’s Netflix comedy Turn Up Charlie has been cancelled after just one series, according to reports.

The sitcom, created by the actor, 47, depicted a has-been DJ trying to turn his fortunes around.

It was a passion close to the Luther actor’s heart as he has been heavily involved in music throughout his career.

Not only does Idris tour the world as DJ Big Driis, but he also raps and has his own record label.

An insider told The Mirror: ‘Idris had hoped to get a second season rolling and was even working on new ideas but he couldn’t get it to work.  

‘Netflix and Idris just didn’t see eye to eye on it.’ 

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Idris and a Netflix spokesperson for comment.  

The decision will come as a blow to Idris who saw the series as a chance to make his way into comedy after his major roles coming in tough-guy shows The Wire and Luther.

The first series was released in 2019 to mixed reviews from critics although many placed the star’s rapping and the show’s music. 

In the show, Idris stars as Charlie, a one-hit wonder from the 1990s who is now living as a bachelor in London.

Desperate to taste stardom again, he reluctantly agrees to become a nanny for his superstar friend’s daughter. 

The series also features a star cameo from Craig David. 

In May, Idris spoke about his plans for a second series of the Netflix show, saying: ‘It’s very exciting. I’m involved with the script creation, which is mainly seeding stories. But again, the scripts have taken on a life of their own.

‘There are characters that have their own narrative strands now. And that’s good, that’s healthy.’

The news comes after Idris and his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba, 29, tested positive for a ‘very mild’ strain of coronavirus in March but have now fully recovered.
