Around 50 well-wishers turned out to show their support for the comedian as his body was taken to a crematorium.

They had been asked to gather outside his home in Portishead, Somerset by his wife Patsy, 76.

She urged people to stick to the strict social distancing rules while paying their respects to the beloved comedian.

Syd, 77, Eddie’s comedy partner on ‘The Little and Large Show’, shed a tear as he stood by the coffin.

A football made up of blue and white flowers – the colours of the comedian’s beloved Manchester City – was placed on the coffin in the hearse.

The procession went from Eddie’s home down the nearby High Street, where more people turned out to applaud.

His funeral is taking place at South Bristol Crematorium – where Syd will be giving the eulogy.

Patsy – Eddie’s wife of 36 years – said previously: “Of course Syd had to give the eulogy and send Eddie off on his final journey. ‘It’s their final appearance together.”

Mourners initially gathered outside Eddie’s home, overlooking the marina in Portishead.

An onlooker said: “There were around 50 people there – between 40 and 50. Patsy and Syd were there. They were welling up.

“The car pulled up and got a round of applause. They took it in turns to go to the back and pay their respects.

“The coffin had a blue and white football on, and some flowers.

“After that the car left to another round of applause. The went from the marina and drove down the High Street.

“There was a scattering of people – about 30 – lining the road. They applauded as he went past.

“All the family looked like they were in cars following behind.”

Join our George Cross campaign for NHS staff

We are urging Sun readers to sign a petition calling for our NHS staff to be awarded the George Cross.

We are backing a proposal by Lord Ashcroft to honour our health heroes with the gallantry gong given for acts of bravery that did not take place in battle.

A No10 spokesman said: “The NHS is doing a fantastic job and the nation will want to find a way to say thank you when we have defeated this virus.”

SAS hero Andy McNab added: “The award of a George Cross would show an emotional appreciation.”

We are asking our readers to please sign the petition below.

Earlier this month Eddie’s distraught widow broke down in tears as she revealed how he died in hospital alone of coronavirus.

Patsy, who was married to the funnyman from 1983 until his death, was inconsolable as she appeared on Good Morning Britain with their son Ryan and Syd Little, Eddie’s comedy partner of 60 years.

She recalled how they spoke on the phone just hours before he died and he promised they would speak again.

She said: “I wanted to talk to him longer but he said ‘Darling, I am going to have to go now’.

In a bid to halt the deadly spread, the first human trials for a potential coronavirus vaccine began yesterday, with side effects for participants set to include a “fever, aches and pains”.

The Jenner Institute in Oxford will begin trialling the vaccine after Britain’s top doctor stressed chances of finding one in the next year were “incredibly small”.

Speaking this week, Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty issued a bleak warning that the nation may have to live with tough social distancing measures for “the next calendar year”.

He said: “In the long run, the exit from this is going to be one of two things, ideally.

“A vaccine, and there are a variety of ways they can be deployed . . . or highly effective drugs so that people stop dying of this disease even if they catch it.”
