Peter Kay’s appearance ‘worries’ Big Night In viewers as comedian returns to TV | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Peter Kay, 46, is one of the nation’s most beloved comedians and therefore, his return from a two-year hiatus for a very special cause was highly anticipated. As part of the BBC’s Big Night In telethon to help those most affected by the coronavirus pandemic in the UK, the Car Share star recreated his infamous (Is This the Way To) Amarillo with members of the public. However, his introduction was pre-recorded from his home in Bolton and his appearance left some viewers worried.

The comedian was last seen on screen in 2018, when his award-winning comedy series Car Share came to an end, which has since made its way back on to BBC iPlayer in light of the lockdown.

Making his return to the BBC, Peter was seen sitting in his garden with a hat and sunglasses on whilst he ate a lollipop.

After the introduction, the camera then switched to the charity single, originally sung by Tony Christie, 76, he shot back in 2005 with the updated scenes included.

However, viewers were more distracted by how the comedian was looking in the introduction segment and took to social media to share their concerns.

The comedian continued: “15 years ago I did a sketch for Comic Relief called Is This The Way To Amarillo.

“I never imagined that it would go down so well and make everybody happy and I thought what a perfect time to recreate it again.

“So, I’ve asked a lot of you to film yourselves and send it in,” he continued, before directing viewers to the number on the screen to donate to the appeal.

Concluding the introduction, he added: “Take care and enjoy yourselves. Lots of love to you all.”

Viewers then saw the updated cut of the single, with health care workers, families at home and members of the frontline battling the coronavirus getting in on the fun.
