Rachel McAdams joined former co-star Lindsay Lohan in calling for a sequel to their 2004 classic comedy Mean Girls.

The 41-year-old Canadian actress appeared on a livestream for Canada’s Heroes Of Health: COVID-19 when she was asked about reprising her signature role.

The Notebook actress later elaborated on the influence the film has had on generations. 

McAdams explained: ‘Let’s hope Mean Girls has helped girls be nicer to each other, and not the other way around.

The 33-year-old actress said: ‘I think I was hanging on to [Mean Girls] for a really long time. I wanted to come back with a Mean Girls 2. To work with Tina [Fey], and the whole crew again, and [director] Mark Waters.

The 2004 hit movie was movie written by Tina Fey as it was based on Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes, which focused on patterns of behavior within teenage girls.

Fey wrote the movie script based on the book and her own high school experiences, with the writer also starring as one of the teachers.

The film starred Lohan as Cady Heron, who moves into a new town and falls in with a popular clique known as The Plastics, lead by Rachel’s character Regina George.

The film also starred Lacey Chabert, Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, Jonathan Bennet and marked the feature film debut of Amanda Seyfried.

Mean Girls proved to be a dependable hit at the box office, earning $86 million domestic and $128.9 million worldwide, from just a $17 million budget.
