Sam Smith’s fans rush to defend star after singer is compared to Captain Tom, 99

Sam Smith fans have rushed to defend the star after the singer was trolled over their ‘quarantine meltdown’ and compared to Captain Tom, 99.

The Money On My Mind hitmaker, 27, was criticised after sharing their varying ‘stages of a quarantine meltdown’ last month as they self-isolate at their £12 million home.

And now the singer, who prefers to use the pronoun ‘they’, has been compared to WWII hero Captain Tom, 99, who has raised £14m for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden.

A different user put: ‘#BeKind congratulations to the immensely inspiring Captain Tom Moore for giving us all something to cheer about. We salute you sir.

‘And to all those people comparing him to Sam Smith have a word with yourselves. Completely different situations and state of health. #lockdown.’

Another follower commented: ‘NOT a fair comparison. Captain Tom did an incredible thing which deserves all recognition.

‘But it is NOT okay to twist his positive achievement to be an attack on Sam Smith who is struggling with the impact lockdown is having on their mental health, a very real situation for many.’ (sic)

A different account said: ‘Why is #SamSmith being compared with Captain Tom Moore? The two have nothing to do with one another, Good on the captain for his amazing energy, and good on Sam for showing their vulnerability. (sic)

They also shared a video where they said: ‘Hello everyone! This is a weird, weird, weird time, oh my gosh, very, very strange.

‘I’m currently in my house. I have got a bit of a headache and allergies but I think I’m alright. But I wanted to stay in just to be safe.

They went on: ‘I just want to bring home and say how important this time right now is for all of us to remain a unit and look out for each other. All the older people – I’m worrying about my nan right now, I’m worrying about so many people.

‘Be patient and giving, and share things – share food people!’

Sam continued to muse: ‘This is going to be an odd and different few weeks. I am going to try and do as much as I can to help. All I can really do – I am pretty s**t at everything else – but I can sing.

‘So if I’m better in a few days I am going to play some songs and record them. And we can hopefully all have a little sing song together.

‘It would be nice, we need it, music is a beautiful thing in a time like this.’
