Mercedes driver is Tasered by police after high speed chase on M11 that ends with him crashing into central reservation and closure of southbound motorway in Essex

A driver was Tasered by police after being involved in a high-speed police chase on the M11 before crashing into the central reservation.

The suspect was arrested following a chase which began in east London near the Limehouse Link and ended after police used ‘tactical contact’ to bring the vehicle to a halt – with one officer sustaining ‘very minor’ injuries.

The arrested man was taken to hospital after the incident near Chigwell, Essex, on Wednesday morning, but had no reported injuries and is being discharged. 

The southbound Carriageway has now been closed with pictures showing a silver Mercedes next to a dented central reservation.   

A Metropolitan Police car is also visible behind the crashed vehicle with officers closing off the area with cones.

Police said they Tasered the driver, shown being covered up with a jacket. He suffered no injuries, was sent him to hospital and has now been discharged

Broken glass can also be seen on the road next to the car, along with three bags and a cardboard box. Further images show a larger police presence inspecting the scene, with an individual appearing to be covered up by an officer with his jacket. 

In a statement, Essex Police said: ‘We are currently on scene of a serious collision on the M11 southbound.

‘The road will be closed for some time into this afternoon between junctions 6 and 4 southbound.

‘Drivers are asked to avoid the area and take an alternative route where possible.’

The National Police Air Service South East twitter account said: ‘Just back from assisting @metpoliceuk on a pursuit. The vehicle was stopped on the M11 southbound. @MPSRTPC.’

A Met Police statement said: ‘At around 09.43hrs on Wednesday, 15 April, Met officers used tactical contact to bring to a stop a suspect vehicle. The vehicle was the subject of an authorised pursuit which began in east London near the Limehouse Link and terminated on the M11 at Chigwell.

‘The driver of the car, a Mercedes, was Tasered and was taken to hospital by officers. He has no reported injuries and is being discharged from hospital. He has been arrested for driving offences.

‘As the pursuit concluded a number of police vehicles were involved in authorised tactical contact resulting in damage. One officer received very minor injuries. 

‘Colleagues from Essex Police are assisting with the scene management and junctions 6 to 4 of the M11 will remain closed while initial enquiries and the recovery of the vehicles take place.’
