Armed police and two air ambulances have been called to a suspected shooting and stabbing in Sussex this afternoon.

At least one stabbing and a shooting have been reported in East Grinstead to Sussex Police, with officers hunting a grey Fiat 500.

Several people are believed to have fled in the car after the shooting.  

Police confirmed two men had been injured, with one believed to be in a serious condition and airlifted to hospital.

David Matthews tweeted: ‘So someone has been shot just up the road from our flat. We live in East Grinstead. WTF is happening to this world!’

Paul Farrar said: ‘My Mrs is a key worker, I was dropping her off at work and passing the park.

‘There was a chap lying on the ground and there were people around him. It just looked like he’d had an accident.

‘When I’d dropped her off, I heard all the police sirens. I heard the ambulances as well.

‘There was lots of ambulances, at least three or four and then the helicopter. I don’t know if it was police or ambulance.

‘There were about four or five people sitting round looking after the guy. Two people looked like they are nursing him and there were other people on their phones.

‘He was on the pavement. They had got him on his side. I drove past at about quarter to two and again just before 2pm.’

A spokesman for Sussex Police said ‘Police were called to Moat Road at 1.33pm on Tuesday (April 14).

‘Two men suffered injuries, the nature and the scale of which have not been fully established at this time, but are not currently thought to be life-threatening.

‘It is believed that that the incident is confined to a small group of people.

‘Anyone with information about the incident is asked to report online or call 101 quoting serial 645 of 14/04.’
