Line Of Duty star Martin Compston hilariously defends his character’s style in a Twitter exchange

He is best known for playing Anti-Corruption Unit Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott in the BBC crime drama, Line of Duty.

But while the role is a hit with many fans, actor Martin Compston was forced to defend his legendary character in a humorous Twitter exchange.

The Scottish star, 35, is currently starring in BBC drama The Nest, which reaches it’s dramatic finale on Monday night.

Suited and booted: Martin Compston was forced to defend his legendary Line Of Duty character on Twitter on Monday

Referring to his role as Dan in the show, writer Jed Mercurio, who is also responsible for shows such as Bodyguard and Line Of Duty, compared the flash character’s ‘suits’ and ‘cars’ to Steve Arnott.

He tweeted: ‘Gripping thriller #TheNest reaches its unmissable finale tonight on BBC1 written by the brilliant Nicole Taylor starring Martin Compston wearing sharper suits and driving a better motor than we’ll ever give Steve Arnott.’

In response, Martin wrote: ‘I’ll give you the car but have to say my LOD 6 suits are looking pretty sharp! Cheers Jed’

The Nest is a five-part series that follows affluent couple Emily (Sophie Rundle) and Dan as they pursue their dream of having a child, apparently by any means necessary.

The first episode saw them strike a deal with disadvantaged 18-year-old Kaya (Mirren Mack), who agreed to act as a surrogate in exchange for £50,000.

Martin plays a rich ex-footballer who lives in a luxurious seaside house in Scotland.

Last week, Line Of Duty co-stars Martin and Vicky McClure shared their hilarious attempts to reconnect via video call, which wasn’t without some technical blunders.

Martin tweeted a video from the beginning of their chat as Vicky tried to figure out how to set up a split screen, only to realise she’d been recording the whole time.

During the live call, it seemed that Martin and Vicky were struggling to figure out how to set up the stream, as she asked whether they needed the subtitles on.

Clapping back: In response to the Tweet,  Martin said 'I’ll give you the car but have to say my LOD 6 suits are looking pretty sharp! Cheers Jed'

Martin in his Scottish accent firmly responded: ‘F**k no!’

As Vicky tried to read the on-screen guidance to set up the video call, while Martin queried whether it was actually recording anything.

The pair couldn’t contain their laughter as Martin was shocked to see the screen was filled up with his face.

It was announced last month that filming for Line Of Duty has been halted due to coronavirus.

The official Twitter account for hit BBC police drama confirmed that cast and crew have been sent home from set, amid filming for the sixth series.

Shooting began in Belfast on February 17, but a statement explained: ‘In light of the spread of Covid-19, after much consideration, @worldprods are suspending filming of #LineofDuty S6 with the support of the BBC. We will keep you updated with further developments in due course. Thank you.’

Vicky McClure, who stars as DCI Fleming in the drama, alongside Martin Compston and Adrian Dunbar, retweeted the message, adding: ‘Look out for one another xxx’.
