EastEnders tough guy Jake Wood reveals his heartwarming passion is caring for chickens rescued from battery farms

He is best known for playing Max Branning on EastEnders.

But in real life Jake Wood is far from the tough guy he portrays on screen, and has revealed his heart warming passion for caring for chickens rescued from battery farms.

No doubt the actor, 47, will have more time spent with his feathered friends following the soap’s suspension amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The soap star spoke about his animals to the Mirror and shared: ‘I’ve started to bring loads of eggs into work for the cast members as we’ve got so many.

‘They’re getting rave reports. Once you have a real, proper egg, it’s totally different from any you buy in the shop.’

The dad-of-two hopes that fellow cast members, including Danny Dyer, will follow in his footsteps and rescue chickens of their own.

The star previously told Chicken & Egg magazine: ‘We’ve lost two, but the remaining four are really healthy and completely transformed.

‘They’re really happy chickens. They come running when I go out, looking for food. They’re laying like you wouldn’t believe.’

The star even revealed that one of his chickens is named after Piers Morgan.

Sadly no eggs will be shared on set at the moment due to the ongoing lockdown amid the pandemic.

Last month EastEnders announced that filming has been suspended and it will cut it’s weekly number of episodes to just two in a bid to ‘ration’ their filmed content.

In a statement shared at the time the BBC said: ‘In light of the spread of Covid-19, after much consideration, it has been decided that filming on EastEnders will be postponed until further notice.

‘The decision was made after the latest Government update. We will continue to follow the latest news and advice from the World Health Organisation and Public Health England.

‘We have also taken the decision to reduce the amount of episodes we broadcast each week to two, so that we can ensure the audience can continue to enjoy EastEnders in their homes for as long as possible.’
