Residents who gathered to clap NHS carers broke out into moving applause after a neighbour played a rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow on his saxophone.

The moving scene was caught on camera in a street in Marske-by-the-Sea, near Middlesbrough, on Thursday evening.

Grateful homeowners were already gathered outside to pay tribute to NHS workers battling coronavirus as part of a national campaign which began last month.

But residents broke out into applause when an elderly resident played the classic tune originally sung by Judy Garland for the classic film The Wizard Of Oz.

Smiling residents watched on in Marske-by-the-Sea as the man played the moving tune

The video begins by showing the pensioner standing behind a large speaker and a music stand.

As he plays the final part of the moving ballad, the filmer’s camera pans to show neighbours standing outside their homes quietly listening.

One woman can be seen in her dressing gown as she films the performance on her smartphone.

Another woman is seen standing across the street with her two children as the performance continues.

Across the street, several other neighbours are outside, including one woman who is listening while sitting on her garden wall with her head resting on her arm.

Finally, as the tune finishes, neighbours shout and whistle encouragingly as they clap to show their appreciation.

The street scene of residents applauding outside their homes was replicated across the country last night.

For the past two weeks, NHS workers have been the recipients of the cheers and claps from the nation.

But last week the event, organised by the Clap For Our Carers campaign, was expanded to include all key workers, such as supermarket staff, the emergency services and teachers who are continuing to work.

Fireworks were let off, people whooped and cheered, while others banged pans and blew into horns to mark today’s event.

Proud Brits took to social media to hail their neighbours’ efforts, with streets filled with applause.

David and Victoria Beckham also joined in, with their family, as did several politicians including Dominic Raab, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

Boris Johnson’s official spokesman said last night: ‘The Prime Minister thanks the NHS for the brilliant care which it is providing.

‘The claps for carers have provided wonderful, unifying moments for the entire country.

‘I’m sure that tonight we will once again see people in their millions paying tribute to our fantastic dedicated care workers.’
