The radio presenter met Caroline in 2007 at Camden’s former celebrity hotspot, The Hawley Arms pub, during his internship at MTV.

Nick and Caroline also worked with each other on The X Factor in 2015, he served as a judge while the late star co-hosted the show with Olly Murs.

Talking to The Guardian, Nick said: ‘I knew she was very loved. She was so funny, engaging and open. And also really vulnerable. I think a lot of people, me included, saw her in themselves. And it was the most horrible, shocking news.’

Nick told the newspaper that he was heading to the gym and heard the news on the radio that Caroline had died, he ‘cried alone’ at his home.

He continued: ‘It’s really hard to take. We weren’t best friends, but we were close and we’d speak all the time. We’d spoken earlier that week. We had plans to hang out, and I’d been messaging her when all the s**t had gone down.’

Nick added that he has had other friends who have passed away early and he always thinks ‘what could I have done?’.

Talking about their 13-year friendship, he said: ‘My experience of Caroline was nothing but joy and fun. She was always one of those people who, if you were having a fine night out, would make it a brilliant night out.’

Caroline tragically took her own life at her home in Stoke Newington, a day after learning the CPS would be pursuing a case of assault against her following a row with beau Lewis Burton at her home in December.

Her caring friend, Lou Teasdale, had been taking care of Caroline and had popped out to the shops when the star had taken her life shortly after she left the property.

Lou had previously shared a gallery of pictures of Caroline, writing: ‘Here’s us like 5 days ago really happy lolling telling each other we’re really fit AND funny and 5 years ago, and 10 years ago. I love you.

‘I hope you are at peace now. Til the end my beautiful friend, Caroline x.’

Caroline’s private funeral took place on March 10 at Greenacres at Colney, near Norwich, a ceremonial park set in a 16 acre forest.
