Piers Morgan reveals Cheryl has been texting him regularly as he praises her coronavirus idea

Piers Morgan has revealed that Cheryl has been texting him regularly as he praised an idea of hers amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, the presenter, 55, told how he has backed the 36-year-old singer’s idea to transform empty fast food drive-thru restaurants into pick-up points where people can get essentials supplies.

Piers told how the pop star has been ‘really engaged’ amid the pandemic, adding that her suggestion was ‘a great idea.’

Sharing their interaction with co-host Charlotte Hawkins and Dr Hilary Jones, Piers said: ‘Cheryl Cole, who has been texting me quite regularly, really engaged, really involved, trying to see what she can do to help.

‘She said “I’ve got a mad idea, and I don’t know if it’s any good, but all the McDonalds drive-thrus have shut down, is there not a way of turning them into drive-thru operations for food and essential products, particularly for health workers?”

‘I thought it was a great idea. They’re all set up to do that. They’re all sitting there empty. She wasn’t sure if she should tweet.’

He continued: ‘I’m glad she did. She got a good response.

‘I don’t know whether anyone from McDonalds can guide us into whether they could do that, but that’s the kind of thing that could be really helpful.’

On Saturday Cheryl took to Twitter to share her idea with her fans.

She tweeted: ‘I have an idea.. I haven’t got into any of the logistics yet but as a concept ..as there are now so many drive through restaurants closed.. could we partner them with food stores, set up an app for locals and use their drive thru’s as a safer way for ppl to shop essentials ?’

Responding to a fans suggestion that her it could be like delivery company Ubereats  for supermarkets, Cheryl added: ‘So there would be an app and I guess like click and collect.

‘But you would order and then collect it through the window at the drive thru. But for essentials.’

Coronavirus was classed a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) earlier this month, leading countries such as Italy, Spain and the UK to implement nationwide lockdowns.

Last week, around 1.4 million vulnerable people in Britain – including those with underlying health conditions – have been told to self-isolate.

Last Monday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered the immediate closure of all non-essential shops and threatened people with fines or even arrest if they do not ‘stay at home’.

The shutdown will last for a minimum of three weeks and the UK’s new state of emergency is unprecedented in modern history.

Gatherings of more than two people have been banned in the most dramatic curbs on freedom ever seen in Britain in time of peace or war, as the government goes all out to stop the spread of the killer disease, which has claimed 1, 228 lives in the UK.

Meanwhile, Piers caused chaos on Good Morning Britain on Monday when he read out a very cheeky birthday message from his good friend Vinnie Jones.

The host turned 55-years-old on Monday and Vinnie, 55, had said: ‘Happy birthday you total legend’ and in smaller writing, ‘total b***end.’

Piers’s co-host, Charlotte, 44, was forced to apologise to viewers and said that the term was not suitable for live daytime television.

Feeling naughty, Piers said: ‘Haven’t we learned we can have a laugh? I can’t even get a birthday card or a cake? Surely I’m allowed to have a laugh with Vinnie.

Charlotte replied: ‘Most of the messages you’re getting aren’t repeatable, does that tell you something?’

Then, in panic mode, Piers tried to cover up what had happened by trying to get the producers to play reggae music.
