Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has weighed in on the postponement of the show’s live finals amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

The star, 49, spoke in the wake of news that the ITV show’s live finals had been postponed, as she insisted the programme would have ‘suffered’ if they had opted to proceed without an audience like Ant And Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. 

On Tuesday, ITV bosses confirmed the news about the live shows following new government guidelines amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

An official statement from ITV read: ‘We have been working with the brilliant production teams at Thames and Syco to find a way of making the live finals work, which were due to be broadcast at the end of May…

‘However, in light of the latest government health guidelines and in line with our priority of safeguarding the wellbeing of everyone involved in our programmes, production of the live shows cannot go ahead as planned…

‘The live finals will therefore be broadcast later in the year.’

Following the announcement, Amanda spoke to Ashley Roberts on Heart Breakfast, where Ashley said: ‘ The live shows on Britain’s Got Talent have been postponed as a result of the coronavirus…

‘The shows are going to continue, continue to air the audition stages of the competition but no word yet on when the live episodes are going to be airing but there’s rumours about September maybe Amanda?..

‘Have you heard anything else about this?’

Amanda reflected on the fact that Ant And Dec had done their show without a live studio audience rather than cancelling: ‘Well, yeah, we got the call over the weekend and I think it’s for the best…

‘I mean I think that Ant and Dec did an amazing job of Takeaway on Saturday but I’m not sure our show, I think our show would suffer quite badly from not having a proper audience. So yes we have heard it’s the Autumn…

‘I would say I would say it might be later than September but it’s quite a competitive time of year as well so…

‘I’m hoping we can still strip it, strip means we sort of do it every single day like we used to or we might end up doing it over the weekends but it’s all still in the running but I definitely think it’s for the best. 

Ashley said: ‘Fingers crossed we’re going to want some entertainment soon so hopefully it come’.

Amanda responded: ‘Audition shows are definitely coming and they are better than ever, so I hope everyone loves that and can cheer up by watching that.’ 

The spread of Covid-19 has forced the television industry to take drastic measures as the deadly virus continues to wreak havoc around the world.

The first trailer for the new season of Britain’s Got Talent was released on Saturday, revealing that the show will return in April. 

Judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams are back for the 14th season, as they made a brief appearance in the trailer alongside co-hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.
