Celebrity chef Curtis Stone has started a makeshift comfort food market after California’s mayor ordered a shutdown of all restaurants in Los Angeles amid coronavirus pandemic

Celebrity chef Curtis Stone has started a makeshift comfort food market amid the coronavirus pandemic in Los Angeles.  

The Australian cook, 44, felt the economic crunch of coronavirus when the Los Angeles mayor ordered for all local restaurants to be closed.

As of March 20, Californian residents have been subject to a stay at home order as an attempt to slow down infection rates.

‘Our world just got totally turned upside down,’ Curtis said told The Daily Telegraph. 

He added: ‘Everyone got scared, guests started to really thin out, we got nervous and before you know it, the mayor of LA ordered a shut down of all restaurants.’ 

Curtis’ Michelin Star Gwen Butcher Shop decided to circumvent the restrictions by creating a makeshift marketplace.

In the kitchen where they produced $135USD rib-eye steaks and lobster rolls, Curtis’ team now works on American comfort food favourites, such as chicken noodle soup and beef stew. 

Curtis had hopes these measures would prevent him from having to cut staff, but with the new stay at home orders in place, it is unclear what the restaurant owner’s next move will be.

The California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered all 40 million residents of the state to stay at home indefinitely on Friday. 

California is one of the hardest-hit states, with 1185 confirmed cases and 23 deaths as of Friday. 

In Curtis’ home country – Australia – there have been 1073 confirmed cases and seven deaths, as of Saturday afternoon.
