Two people shouting Islamist slogans are arrested after smashing a car into Barcelona Airport

  • Vehicle drove into Barcelona airport’s terminal one on Friday morning
  • Two car occupants, both Albanian, shouted Islamist slogans, said police chief
  • Police bomb squad confirmed there were no explosives in the vehicle

Two people shouting Islamist slogans have been arrested after they smashed a car into Barcelona’s airport. 

No explosives were found in the vehicle, believed to be a grey Renault Megane, which was driven into El Prat airport’s terminal one at around 5am.

Regional police chief Eduard Sallent told a news conference that investigators have not ruled out any theories over the drivers motives. Both were from Albania.

No injuries have been reported due to the incident. 

Spain remains in a state of lockdown due to coronavirus as authorities grapple with the pathogen. It is the second worst affected country in Europe.
