Comedienne Kathy Griffin announced late Tuesday night that her mother Maggie Griffin has passed away.

Kathy, 59, took to social media to share her sad news with her fans who grew to know Maggie through her appearance for six seasons on the Bravo TV show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.

‘I am gutted,’ Kathy wrote on Instagram alongside a photo showing her and her mom sitting side by side on an outdoor sofa overlooking an infinity pool and a scenic canyon.

Calling her mom ‘the one and only’, the stand up comic wrote: ‘She was my best friend. She was my family. You knew her. She appreciated you guys so much.’

‘I’m shaking. I won’t ever be prepared.’

She went on: ‘Her point of view. So unique. We just GOT each other. I’m so grateful you got to be part of her life. You loved her. I know it. She knew it. She’s irreplaceable.’

‘I’m telling you right now, I am not doing well with this. I’m rambling now. Sorry. It truly feels like the end of an era. Oh, and OF COURSE she went on St Patrick’s Day.’

Maggie was a first generation Irish-American as was her husband John Patrick Griffin, who died in 2007 at the age of 91.

She would have celebrated her 100th birthday on June 10. 

Several of Kathy’s celebrity pals joined her social media followers in sending their condolences to the star. 

‘I’m so so sorry Kathy i know losing ones mother is one of life’s hardest blows no pain like it i know,’ Maria Shriver posted.

‘May you be gentle with yourself may you know you have love around you and know i send you my love.’

Selma Blair commented:  ‘Oh Kathy! I am so sorry. So sorry. She was always making me laugh when I watched you two. This grief will be deep. And hard. I am sure. Feel it. It will lessen.’

Blair added: ‘And she will be in every bottle of white you open. And everywhere else you find her spirit … sending strength. And massive hugs.’ 

Ross Mathews wrote: ‘Oh Kathy. There are no words. What a beautiful relationship the two of you share. I wish that connection for everyone.’

‘I feel so lucky that I got to meet her. Thank you for sharing her with us all so we could love her even slightly as much as you do. I love you.’

Kathy had revealed in 2019 that her mom had dementia and was in a rapid decline.

She shared that she had not had a proper conversation with her in some time.  

‘I know this is a reality that millions of people deal with every year. But when it comes to my mom this is particularly hard because her sharp mind was everything,’ Kathy explained. 

Maggie is survived by three of the five children she shared with her husband John.

Along with Kathy are sons Kenny and John; daughter Joyce died in 2017 and son Gary died in 2014.
