Tom Gleeson’s regret from his Gold Logie acceptance speech

Comedian Tom Gleeson divided the room with his Gold Logie acceptance speech in June last year.

The Hard Quiz host poked fun at the candidates who had sincerely campaigned for the award, and said his victory was a win for ‘taking the p**s’ and ‘not giving a s**t’.

Speaking to the Brisbane Times on Saturday, the 45-year-old said that while he will never apologise for his behaviour, he does have one tiny regret about the night.

‘I was never going to apologise’: Tom Gleeson, 45, revealed one tiny regret from his 2019 Gold Logie acceptance speech in an interview with the Brisbane Times on Saturday

Recalling a media event that he attended after the ceremony, Tim revealed that journalists continuously asked whether he had any ‘regrets’ or wanted to ‘apologise’.

In response, Tom said: ‘I’ve never apologised to anyone – why should I? There’s nothing funny about a comedian apologising, so I was never going to apologise.’

Tom did however say that he had one minor regret about the evening – making his wife Ellie Parker sit through the ceremony.

‘She knows what I’m like and I think part of her, she would love it if Australia knew me [the way she does], if the whole room would go, “Oh, isn’t he wonderful”. But I’m playing a different game.’

And while he has been offered TV gigs following the awards, including Dancing With The Stars and I’m A Celebrity, he claims to have denied them all.

‘[I want to] keep everything the same, just the same please, let’s just go back to what we were doing please, it was all good,’ he said.

Meanwhile, Amanda Keller, who was also nominated for last year’s Gold Logie, admitted on her WSFM radio show in July, that she found Tom’s speech upsetting.

‘He’s a comedian and I get what he was doing, which was trying to subvert the result and good luck to him, he did it. That’s how it goes. I have no problem at all with that,’ the 58-year-old said on Jonesy & Amanda.

‘But I think in his speech when he said, “Everyone that works in television, if you want to win this, you’re a wanker”, that kind of upset me.’

Amanda felt he was being ‘unnecessarily mean’ to Grant Denyer, who won the previous year’s Gold Logie.

Amanda continued: ‘[Tom] said, “Yeah I won it last year for Grant, and sucker, now I’ve done it on my own for me!” That’s not fair to Grant, he won that last year on his own two feet.’

‘[I have] no problem with Tom, but it gave everyone permission to say, “Yeah, you’re all up yourself, this is all a big joke”. And it wasn’t a joke to me.

‘I don’t know why we’re embarrassed in television to be proud of our work.’
