Greggs risks sparking fury in Cornwall as it plans to open new store

Pasty war rages again: Greggs sparks Cornish fury over plans to open new store in the county where locals call it ‘Satan’s franchise’

  • Bakery chain has sights set on an outlet at a service station in Victoria, Cornwall
  • Previously tackled pasty-loving county in 2018 by establishing a store in Saltash
  • But it was forced to close after just nine months when it was boycotted by locals

Greggs has risked sparking fury as it plots to open a new store in Cornwall just months after residents boycotted the first branch.

The high-street bakery chain is thought to have its sights set on an outlet at a service station in Victoria, Cornwall.

But the announcement has been met with an outcry from locals who say that the brand is not welcome in the county.

One social media user, Carole Serbert, wrote: ‘Why don’t they keep the [poo emoji] out of Cornwall?

‘Haven’t they realised we eat a lot better than that down here with hundreds of decent bakeries the length of Cornwall.’

Another, Cassie Osborne, added: ‘And I’m sure they will leave just as quick when again they get the hint we don’t want or need [their] cr**.’

And a third, Leaim Nicholls, commented: ‘They do realise there is an actual pasty shop in there? Can’t see people coming to Cornwall to buy some tripe they can get at home.’

Greggs, which has more than 1,500 across the country, previously made an attempt to tackle the pasty-loving county in 2018 by establishing a store in Saltash.

But residents accused the chain of being ‘junk’ and ‘Satan’s franchise’ before boycotting it altogether.

The store was forced to shut after just nine months of trading with bosses confirming the closure came after a ‘thorough review’.

A spokesman later added: ‘We continue to look for new opportunity sites across the South West of England as part of our long-term plans.’

Greggs has been contacted for comment.
