He’s known for portraying a crime-fighting mutant in the X-Men movies.

But Hugh Jackman looked world’s away from his shaggy Wolverine character as he enjoyed an early morning walk with his mother, Grace, in New York.

The 51-year-old actor seemed to be in great spirits as he strolled along city streets with his mom after spending years rebuilding their relationship following her abrupt departure from the family when Hugh was just a child.

Hugh sported a matching grey sweats ensemble complete with a long-sleeve T-shirt and pants.

He kept his chest warm with a puffy black vest and wore tall ankle socks with a pair of black trainers.

Grace bundled up in a vibrant coat zipped up to her neck paired with black slacks and grey Nike sneakers.

The mother-son duo seemed to be enjoying a lively conversation as they pounded the pavement in Manhattan.

Years ago, the Les Misérables star admitted his mom had abandoned his brothers and sisters, and move back to the United Kingdom when he was eight-years-old.

He told Australian Women’s Weekly in 2012 that Grace told her family about her move via telegram, and it wasn’t until he was a teenager that he realized she wasn’t coming home.

‘One of the main things I remember is that horrible feeling that people were talking about you and looking at you because it was odd for the mother to leave,’ he said.

‘The thing I never felt, and I know this might sound strange, I never felt that my mum didn’t love me. I’ve spoken about it at length with her since and I know she was struggling. She was in hospital after I was born suffering from post-natal depression,’ he added. ‘There wasn’t a support network for her here.’

After his mother and father, Christopher, Hugh’s sisters Zoe and Sonia went to live with Grace in the UK. Hugh and his brothers, Ian and Ralph, stayed in Sydney, Australia, with their father.

‘It was traumatic,’ Hugh said, recalling his difficult childhood. ‘I thought she was probably going to come back. And then it sort of dragged on and on.’

He admitted that becoming a parent with wife Deborra-Lee Furness changed his entire perspective.

‘I think having kids of your own just adds another level of empathy and understanding,’ he said. ‘And there comes a certain point in life when you have to stop blaming other people for how you feel or the misfortunes in your life.’
