A thirsty giraffe appeared to be doing the splits in order to get a drink from a watering hole.

The adult male, which roams freely at Zimanga Nature Reserve in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, was spotted having a slurp at a man-made dam designed to blend into the environment.

Due to his long neck, the 15ft-tall giraffe had to awkwardly shuffle his front legs to lower his body enough to get close to the water source.

Giraffes are extremely vulnerable while drinking as they have to get down into a crouching position. This means getting up quickly in the event of danger is not easy.

Fortunately, giraffes only need to drink once every few days as they can get most of their water from the plants they eat.
