Love Island’s Theo Campbell reveals he is lining up a risky operation after champagne cork accident left him blind in one eye… but it could leave his sight even WORSE

Love Island star Theo Campbell has revealed that he is lining up a risky eye operation after an accident with a champagne cork left him blind in one eye.

The reality star, 28, revealed that in a bid to regain his sight he’s considering a cornea transplant, otherwise known as keratoplasty, but there’s a chance it could leave his vision even worse,

In August, Theo revealed that he had been left blind in one eye after he was struck by a champagne cork in a freak accident, as he enjoyed a friends holiday to Ibiza.

Theo told The Sun that he planning to undergo the cornea transplant, after his vision was reduced to just blurs and colours.

He said: ‘It’s blurry now, but my other eye is fine. I’ve kind of adapted to it. I have sulked. I have been down, but I’m like most people I don’t cry on my Instagram.

‘I accepted it won’t get better. It’s not able to magically heal up. It’s been seven months now.

‘If my eye does reject it, it could be worse. I can see colours and shapes and see people are there, but the procedure could make it worse. It’s risky.’

WHAT IS A CORNEA TRANSPLANT?

A cornea transplant is an operation to remove all or part of someone’s cornea if it is damaged by injury or disease and replace it with donor tissue.

The cornea is a see-through layer at the front of the eye which protects the vital parts such as the iris and pupil.

The operation may also be called a keratoplasty or a corneal graft.

And it is commonly performed to help people who have a condition called keratoconus, which is when the cornea changes shape.

The procedure can be performed on an entire cornea or just on the outer layers, depending on how seriously damaged it is.

Patients can be kept awake during the surgery but given local anaesthetic in their eye, or completely sedated under general anaesthetic. The op takes about an hour to complete.

Potential complications include the body rejecting the new cornea, infection, or further vision problems.

Theo has spoken openly about struggling with losing his sight, after a freak accident with a champagne cork left him blind in one eye.

The star previously admitted it happened when he removed his sunglasses for a few seconds, after an excited fan approached him with a bottle ready to blow.

Recalling the incident on Instagram, he said: ‘Walking through there was champagne sprayed, 100 bottles going off, and someone sprayed champagne under these glasses in my eye.

‘I’m trying to get the champagne out of my eye, and within a split second, some girls in front of me got a bottle down by her waist, it was a perfect bullseye shot hits me clean in the eye, and that’s how easy it was.

‘I took my glasses off for a second. I knew straight away and put my hand down and nobody really saw I was in agony, I couldn’t open my eyes, I was too scared and I had blood in my hand. Then I got rushed to hospital now I’m here.’

Revealing the split on FUBAR Radio, he said: ‘I don’t know what to call it. What’s the right way to say it? I got slinged! I don’t know what to call it.’

The athlete from Bath went on to claim that ‘girls in general are hard to deal with,’ before labelling the other women who have appeared on Love Island ‘mentally unstable.’
