Boris Johnson and fiancee Carrie Symonds are spotted watching England play rugby against Wales

Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds have been spotted in public for the first time since announcing they are expecting a baby together.

The couple were seen in the stands at the Guinness Six Nations match between England and Wales at Twickenham Stadium this afternoon.

Both appeared in good spirits as they laughed together after news that they are expecting a child was revealed by Ms Symonds on Instagram last week.

Mr Johnson’s fiancée again showed off her ‘Princess Diana-style’ engagement ring estimated to have cost between £25,000 and £30,000 after debuting her blossoming baby bump in photographs released by Downing Street earlier today.

The Prime Minister, 55, has at least five children, although he has never confirmed the exact number after imposing a blanket ban on talking about his family. This will be the first child born to his 31-year-old partner.

Downing Street earlier today shared photographs of Ms Symonds alongside the Prime Minister at a reception held in Number 10 on Thursday to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Ms Symonds’ growing baby bump – and a large engagement ring – were visible in the pictures released this morning.

They announced last weekend that they were engaged and expecting a baby in the ‘early summer’, with Ms Symonds telling her followers on Instagram she felt ‘incredibly blessed’.

She said she and Mr Johnson, 55, got engaged at the end of last year ‘and we’ve got a baby hatching early summer’.

The announcement came after months of speculation as Ms Symonds had not been seen in public since the general election in December.

Earlier this week, the PM indicated he would ‘almost certainly’ be taking paternity leave when his new baby arrives.

In a separate interview, though, he appeared flustered when asked if he will be changing nappies.

The new arrival will be the third baby born to a serving prime minister in recent history.

Tony Blair’s wife Cherie gave birth to son Leo in May 2000, three years after her husband’s first election victory.

David Cameron and his wife Samantha welcomed daughter Florence in 2010, three months after the then-PM had formed a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats after that year’s general election produced a hung parliament.

This morning, photographs were release showing Miss Symonds and the Prime Minister attending the reception for International Women’s Day in No. 10.

Never one to shy away from bold colours and fashion-forward silhouettes, the former Conservative Party press officer donned a long-sleeve tiered maxi dress from Anthropologie for the reception.

Managing director of 77 Diamonds Tobias Kormind said: ‘Without examining it through a microscope, what looks really interesting is in some of the pictures it looks like a blue sapphire.

‘It is actually quite similar to the Diana ring that Kate wore but it is not as big, that is for sure.’

He added: ‘With sapphires it is quite difficult to tell the quality from looking at them. There could be a wide range of qualities from the value but it is likely between £25,000 and £30,000. It could be a bit less than that.’

‘Many of you already know but for my friends that still don’t, we got engaged at the end of last year… and we’ve got a baby hatching early summer.’

The date of their wedding has not been announced, but it will mark the first time in at least 250 years a sitting prime minister has married while in office.

The appearance book ends a difficult week for Mr Johnson, starting with accusations from Labour MPs that his pregnancy announcement last Saturday was a ploy to distract attention from a damaging Home Office row engulfing the government and Priti Patel.

Mr Johnson was under the spotlight for his slow response to the coronavirus outbreak and faced a backlash for not visiting flood-hit communities during the recent storms, instead staying put at the government’s grace-and-favour country retreat in Kent, at the time.

The same day the pregnancy announcement was made, Home Office mandarin Sir Philip Rutnam resigned following an ugly briefing war with Ms Patel.

Sir Philip claimed there had been a ‘vicious and orchestrated’ campaign against him and added that he intends to sue the Government for constructive dismissal.

After persistent reports of a major rift between them, the 33-year civil service veteran walked out with all guns blazing, launching a withering attack on Ms Patel in a statement on live TV.
