The Last Of Us video game heads to the small screen with a TV adaptation by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin

Following his critically-acclaimed HBO series Chernobyl, writer Craig Mazin is re-teaming with the network to adapt the hit video game The Last Of Us.

Mazin wil be teaming up with Neil Druckmann, the head writer and creative director of The Last Of Us, to develop the series.

Both Mazin and Druckmann will serve as writers and executive producers of the series, in, what The Hollywood Reporter is calling a ‘rare development’ with the creator of the game teaming up with the show’s writer.

The Last Of Us debuted in 2013, set in a post-apocalyptic environment, following two characters, Joel and Ellie, portrayed by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson through voice and motion capture in the game.

The players control the characters as they traverse what’s left of the United States, dealing with hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures.

There are also online multiplayer modes of the game, where players can even connect the game to their Facebook accounts.

Upon its release on Playstation 3 in 2013, the game was hailed as a masterpiece, with many 10/10 ratings.

The game was given a ‘remastered’ version in 2014, which was enhanced for the new Playstation 4 console, landing over 200 Game of The Year Awards in 2014.

As of April 2018, The Last Of Us had sold a whopping 17 million units, just five years after its debut.

The HBO series will cover the events of the original game, with the possibility of using content from the highly-anticipated sequel, The Last Of Us Part II, debuting on May 29.

‘Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus,’ Mazin said in a statement.

‘Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil,’ he continued.

The Last Of Us is the first TV project to come out of Sony’s new Playstation Productions, which is also making the Uncharted movie as their first feature production.

The Last Of Us was previously in development as a movie, with Sam Raimi slated to produce, from a script by Druckmann, though it never got off the ground.

Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams expressed interest at one point in playing Ellie in the movie adaptation.
