The spectacular finalists of the Smithsonian Magazine annual photo contest

Smithsonian Magazine’s 17th Annual Photo Contest entices adventure with 60 breathtaking images taken from around the world.

The photo entries run the gamut in emotion. There is the cute: two monkeys relax in a Japanese hot Spring. There is the poignant: a young Buddhist novice basks in the sunrays of an old monastery in the ancient city of Bagan, Myanmar. There is the visually stunning: a Vietnamese fisherman’s net casts a hypnotizing spiral in the emerald waters of the Phú Yên province (above).

Smithsonian Magazine editors received more than 36,000 submissions from 145 countries and territories.

Photographers were invited to submit images under six categories: ‘Natural World,’ ‘The American Experience,’ ‘Travel,’ ‘People,’ ‘Altered Images’ and ‘Mobile.’ Readers are given the opportunity to browse the 60 finalists and vote here for their favorite image now through March 30, 2020 and the winners will be announced on March 31.
