The Banker is based on the true story of Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) who together with Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson), two of the first African-American bankers in America.

Both Garrett and Morris purchased banks in Texas to allow African-Americans opportunities to own their own homes and start businesses.

Due to the Jim Crow laws during the 1950s, they had to get around this by hiring a white man (Nicholas Hoult) to pose as the head of their corporation while they pretended to be a janitor and chauffeur.

The Banker was slated to have its world premiere last November at AFI Fest in Los Angeles, then debuting in theaters on December 13.

The release was pushed back, though, amid allegations of abuse against Bernard Garrett Jr., a co-producer on the film and the son of Bernard Garrett, made by his half-sister Cynthia Garrett, who claimed he molested her.

Garrett Jr. refuted the accusations in a lengthy statement to Deadline, stating, ‘This simply never happened. Period.’
