Carrie Underwood shares her husband had to take their two kids into a ‘safe room’

Carrie Underwood has been traveling while promoting her new book Find Your Path.

But back at her home in Nashville it has not been so easy. There has been a scary tornado that could have caused a lot of damage. The country singer told Today on Tuesday that her husband Mike Fisher was there to take care of their two sons Isaiah and Jacob.

‘He said he had to go upstairs at, like, 2 a.m. and grab the boys and take them down.’ said the Cry Pretty hitmaker. ‘We have like a little safe room in our house. I bet everybody was crying.’

At least one tornado tore through Nashville and a section of Middle Tennessee late Monday and early Tuesday, killing at least nine people, injuring many others and leaving a number of homes and other buildings in ruins, according to CNN.

At least 150 people in the metro Nashville area had to be taken to the hospital.

Country singer Taylor Hicks, who was on American Idol in 2006, told HLN that a tornado ‘damaged homes near his in the Germantown neighborhood of Nashville.’

‘There’s homes leveled. There’s churches that have been hit by this. There’s been a lot of people that’s been affected in downtown Nashville. It’s been a rough night,’ he said.

Carrie also touched on balancing her home life with her busy career when on Today.

‘You are important. If you don’t have your balance, everything else is out of balance,’ said the cover girl.

And she also had trouble when fame hit in 2005.

‘Everyone has insecurities. It took me a minute — I had to start feeling physically not good before I was like, “Something’s not right here.” And it was a lack of knowledge, it was a lack of knowing how to take care of myself,’ she said.

‘Going too far in the other direction led me to figure out what works because I wasn’t feeling good, I wasn’t happy — I knew it didn’t feel right, so it let me to do better.’

This comes after she  showed off her stunning figure in the April issue of Women’s Health magazine, which hits newsstands March 17.

Inside, Underwood revealed that her slim frame just comes down to discipline.

‘I love rules. This is how I feel good about myself, and this is how I operate,’ said the 36-year-old performer. ‘Physical fitness makes everything else possible.’

Her ideal ratio is 45 percent carbs, 30 percent fat, and 25 percent protein.

Underwood works out as often as she can: ‘If I can work out seven days a week – which doesn’t happen, but if I can – I’m going to. Because the next week, I might get two days,’ said the crooner.

She also has a certain flow for when she visits the gym. And if she is not prepared, it goes wrong: ‘When I walk in and don’t have a plan, I usually walk out.’

When on the treadmill, she psychs herself out.

‘I have to set goals for myself: “Every 15 minutes I’m going to hit 1.25 miles, then by the end of an hour I’ll have run 5 miles.”‘

As far as getting Zen, she would rather get moving.

On American Idol in 2005

‘That’s a part of my personality I need to be better with. I’d love to sit in a bubble bath, but that’s not going to happen. My self-care is my gym time, and that’s a stress reliever for me.’

But she was not always body confident.

After she was shamed for her body on American Idol in 2005, she dieted.

‘I shouldn’t care what other people think about me…I was tired, and I kept buying bigger clothes. I knew I could be better for myself, and I let my haters be my motivators,’ she confessed.

She worked out and counted calories and the benefits were immediate.

‘I was sleeping better, and I had more energy for our grueling schedule.’

But when she got down to 800 calories per day she lost her way.

‘I would “fall off the wagon,” then feel terrible and repeat the cycle. Your body is screaming I need more calories. I need more carbs!’ she admitted.

Now she is on track, however, but does indulge once in a while.

‘I do have my vice, and it’s red wine. It’s good for my heart, right?!’ laughed the songbird.

During her interview, Carrie also touched on how she felt experiencing three miscarriages before the birth of her second son.

‘For my body to not be doing something it was ‘supposed to do’ was a tough pill to swallow.

‘It reminded me I’m not in control of everything,’ said Underwood.

And she was happy to share her pain: ‘It’s not a dirty secret. It’s something many women go through.’
