Police are investigating after a young child died and another child and a woman were seriously injured in an incident at a house near Larne, sources have said.

It is understood that police are treating the case at a rural farmhouse on the outskirts of the Co Antrim town as a domestic incident.

Police said the investigation is at an ‘early stage’ and that they aren’t looking for ‘anyone else in connection with the death.’

Reports in Northern Ireland said that the woman, the mother of the children aged in her 30s, is being treated at the scene for a ‘knife injury’.

Locals said a family have been renting the farmhouse for a year or so.

Two children, one aged one-and-a-half and another ‘not much older’ according to a neighbour, live at the property as part of the ‘family of four’.

She said the children are ‘beautiful and very young’.

‘I’ve spoken to the man once, but they generally keep themselves to themselves,’ she added.

Another woman who said she knows the family who live at the property at the end of a country lane overlooking Larne Lough, said the mother of the family is a nurse.

She described the news as ‘shocking’. ‘You just wouldn’t believe it,’ she told the Belfast Telegraph.

A major police and emergency services operation has centred on the property throughout Monday.

Police and forensics officers are at the scene.
