The smile that said ‘I’m pregnant, but not telling’: Carrie Symonds has been seen in public just once since Boris Johnson’s election victory

  • She was wearing a distinctly contended smile as they left by the back door
  • The couple announced tonight that they are expecting a child in ‘early summer’

A joyful smile may have given an early clue to Carrie Symonds’ pregnancy when she was seen in public for the only time since Boris Johnson’s election victory last year.

Miss Symonds, 31, was photographed smiling contentedly to herself as she was photographed leaving Number 10 through a back door on February 13.

It was the only time she has been seen in public since the couple were snapped triumphantly entering Downing Street two months earlier.

Wearing a long black coat and navy scarf, she was snapped the day before Valentine’s leaving through the more discreet entrance at the rear along with Mr Johnson who waved at photographers.

Miss Symonds had been keeping an increasingly low profile since the election victory, spending more time away from Downing Street and opting instead for the PM’s remote Buckinghamshire home, Chequers, where the PM had been trying out the motorbike she bought him as a Christmas present.

She and Mr Johnson, 55, announced today that they had got engaged and that she was expecting a baby.

She confirmed the news on her Instagram profile writing: ‘I wouldn’t normally post this kind of thing on here but I wanted my friends to find out from me.

‘Many of you already know but for my friends that still don’t, we got engaged at the end of last year… and we’ve got a baby hatching early summer.’

The date of their wedding has not been announced, but it will mark the first time in at least 250 years a sitting prime minister has married while in office.

With the due date in the next few months, there is little doubt the couple would have already known about their happy news when Miss Symonds was pictured a fortnight ago.

Rumours have been flying around Westminster since late last year.

And they are likely to have been keeping their secret during her and Mr Johnson’s much-publicised New Year holiday trip to the Caribbean.

The couple flew out to Mustique on Boxing Day and stayed for ten days at their hideaway, which boasts four-poster beds, open terraces and an infinity pool.

The Caribbean island is extremely popular with VIPs and celebrities thanks to its notoriously private reputation.

For their post-Christmas break, Mr Johnson and Miss Symonds flew British Airways to St Lucia and then used a small propeller plane for the hop to Mustique.

Mr Johnson, who has been married twice previously, this month finalised his divorce with estranged wife Marina Wheeler, with whom he has two daughters and two sons.

A spokesperson for the couple said tonight: ‘The Prime Minister and Ms Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer.’

Ms Symonds is the first unmarried partner of an incumbent British prime minister. She has largely kept out of the public eye since Mr Johnson, 55, took the reins of government in July.

She was scarcely seen at the PM’s side on the general election campaign trail, but waved with her soon-to-be husband on the steps outside the famous black door following the Conservatives’ thumping victory.

The couple chose to live at the larger four-bedroom flat at No 11 Downing Street instead of the smaller two-bedroom official residence at No 10.

They already share a dog, Dilyn, with the PM saying that he helped keep his stress down during the election campaign.
