‘Michael Bloomberg would be worse than Trump’: AOC blasts the former NYC mayor

Freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has claimed that electing former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is ‘not a good idea’ and will only lead to a president who is a ‘worse Trump’.

The New York congresswoman told The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 AM on Tuesday that the country can’t ‘go back to the same policies that we had before’ by electing Bloomberg, claiming that it will pave the way for a ‘more sophisticated’ Trump.

She also called out those candidates who rely on big donors, stating that they are listening to people ‘who are not like most working families’ in return for campaign funding.

Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and is a star player as his warm-up act on the campaign trail.

‘We obviously have to beat Trump,’ she told The Breakfast Club when questioned about her thoughts on three-time Mayor Bloomberg.

‘But if we beat Trump and go back to the same policies that we had before, a worse Trump is going to come. A Trump that’s more sophisticated, whose fascism is less obvious, is going to come and things could get even worse.’

She added that she believes voters in other parts of the country are turning to Bloomberg because they see the charitable work he has done with his foundation but have not looked back on his time in office.

‘A lot of people don’t know Bloomberg We’re here in New York City. We lived under his tenure as mayor,’ Ocasio-Cortex said.

‘We know exactly what he did. This is part of what he’s doing when he comes in, swoops in super late in the game with billions of dollars at his disposal and is able to kind of shower the airwaves with his cash.

‘He funds a lot of non-profits and charities with his Bloomberg Foundation. People see what he’s done with his money and may have endorsed him without seeing what he did in a position of power.

‘I don’t think it’s the smart thing to do,’ she added.

‘It’s not a good idea. Our experience have seen this from stop and frisk to the surge in housing prices … how he talks about transgender people.’

The congresswoman was pushed about whether she would ever take money from Bloomberg, to which she answered ‘No’.

The billionaire came late to the Democratic race and has been harshly criticized for the level of his campaign spending, several of his policies during his tenure as NYC Mayor and the nondisclosure forms that several female employees signed after complaints were filed against him.

While Bloomberg has apologized for his controversial stop-and-frisk policy and has released some women from their nondisclosure agreements, Ocasio-Cortez argued that he has not done enough to redeem himself.

‘I think that redemption in politics is an acceptable thing, but you have to earn it,’ Ocasio-Cortez said.

‘It needs to be proven through years of work and evolution for the right thing.

‘This is what happened with Bloomberg. He was down with stop-and-frisk. He fought for it in the courts, the courts overturned it as unconstitutional. He still fought it, defended it after him being mayor and then … five minutes before he runs for president, he says, “Okay, maybe this wasn’t the right policy”.’

She also slammed candidates who rely on wealthy donors for their campaigns, claiming that there is subtext when you are ‘asking for a check’ which implies you will let them steer your own politics.

‘You should do what I’m telling you or else I may stop giving’ she said.

‘You’ll be listening to rich people all day, telling you what they think you should be doing in politics.

‘Ultimately, that’s very, very different from what is a winning strategy and what maximizes well being for working people.’

Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary and has proven herself to be a successful surrogate and warm-up act for the senator on the campaign trail.

Her endorsement came the same night he returned to the Democratic debate stage following recovery from a heart attack.

She told Noticias Telemundo in 2019 that campaigning for Sanders back in 2016 kick-started her own whirlwind ride to congress.

‘I was a community organizer in the Bronx for Senator Sanders during the last presidential campaign. That was my first experience, organizing right there in the street for an election,’ she stated.

On the campaign trail Ocasio-Cortez has said of Sanders: ‘There are two paths we can take – one is a nomination that brings us back to business as usual, but business as usual was not working for working people.

‘And as someone who has been told to go back, I’m going to tell you, we’re moving forward.’

Ocasio-Cortez previously stated she will support whichever Democrat is on the ticket.
