So which destination is the jockey’s favourite?

Here he talks about why he loves to escape to Barbados, opens up about surviving a tragic plane crash in Sussex – and more…

What’s your earliest holiday memory?

Going on holiday to Sardinia with my father when I was ten. We stayed for a month — it was a very special holiday. He used to ride abroad a lot, but this was the first time we had spent a long time together.

Ideal travel companion?

Anywhere with my wife Catherine, as we hardly ever travel together and she is always so calm and fun. It’s a huge treat to be with her.

What’s your biggest travel indulgence?

Flying first-class and staying in the top hotels; there is no chance I could ride a race after spending an uncomfortable night.

Where is your favourite winter destination?

I love Barbados and go regularly with my family. I spend a lot of time in Dubai in the winter, too. I love the laid-back lifestyle of hot countries, eating fruit and fresh fish — which is perfect for me, as I’m always on a diet.

Favourite city?

Rome is so beautiful. I love the way the layers of so many ages and civilisations have been built on top of each other. I discover different fountains and piazzas every time I go, and the food is incredible.

Favourite drive?

I love to drive along the Amalfi coast.

Worst travel experience?

When my plane crashed in 2000. Sadly, the pilot was killed. We were on our way to Goodwood in Sussex, but we weren’t high enough to get over Devil’s Dyke. To this day, it still terrifies me to fly in a small plane.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive somewhere new?

I check out where the nearest golf course is. I’m a keen golfer and I play whenever I get the chance. My handicap is 18.

  • Frankie is due to be competing at the Dubai World Cup on March 28.
