A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a victim was chased down the street and attacked with an axe last night. 

The ‘shocking’ incident took place at around midnight in Partington, Greater Manchester where a crime scene remains in place this afternoon.

The 36-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene soon after the attack.

Prior to the attack, the offender caused significant damage to a number of parked cars.

The attacker later rang the police to report the incident before he fled the scene, Greater Manchester Police said.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. A cordon is in place while the murder inquiry continues, police said.

Residents were woken up by emergency services rushing to the scene, as police describe a ‘shocking’ incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Jonathan Kelly said: ‘This a shocking incident in which a man has sadly lost his life.

‘Our thoughts remain with his family, who are being supported by specialist officers at this incredibly distressing time.’

He added: ‘I would like to reassure the public that this is being treated as an isolated incident, and we have an increased police presence in the Partington area as we piece together the exact circumstances of what happened.

‘Whilst we have a man in custody, our investigation is very much ongoing.’
