Hubei residents are detained in ‘coronavirus re-education camps’ for ‘strolling on the streets’

Authorities in China’s Hubei Province have sent residents who strolled on the streets during the coronavirus outbreak to ‘re-education camps’, according to reports.

A video shows the residents studying in a room guarded by anti-coronavirus officers at one of the centres last Saturday in Huangshi, Hubei Province of central China.

It is said the detainees would need to pass exams on coronavirus regulations and sign an agreement letter before being released. They were punished for ‘being outside for no particular reasons’.

The local government assembled five patrol teams last week to catch people who are wandering down the streets amid the outbreak.

The residents were sent to the Seventeenth High School of Huangshi, which is used as the re-education centre.

The camps have also been branded as ‘classes for disobedience’, reported Chudian News, an affiliation to Guangdong Broadcast and Television Station.
