A 10-year-old boy has died after a car crashed into a highway maintenance vehicle on a motorway.

A silver BMW hit a stationary maintenance vehicle on the hard shoulder of the clockwise carriageway of the M60 motorway near Junction 23 for Audenshaw, Greater Manchester.

Two boys travelling in the BMW, aged six and 10, were taken to hospital with serious injuries but the 10-year-old boy was pronounced dead a short time later, according to Greater Manchester Police.

Police were called to the incident shortly after 2pm on Friday. 

The driver of the BMW, a man in his thirties, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving, the force said.

A woman in the highways maintenance vehicle received minor injuries, police added.

Sergeant Matthew Picton called for witnesses who saw the crash or had dashcam footage to come forward.

He said: ‘This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the boy’s family at this terrible time.

‘Our officers are currently piecing together the circumstances of the collision and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed it, or who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch as a matter of urgency.’
