It’s a household object you wouldn’t normally think to clean, but professional cleaner Barbara Mills has revealed rangehood filters should be washed in the dishwasher.
While the common kitchen item is often overlooked by many Australians, Barbara suggested washing the filters once a week in the dishwasher to leave them looking brand new.
‘I’ve been cleaning homes for 30 years, and it’s always the first thing I go to when I start my cleans – the rangehood filters,’ Barbara said.

This handy tip will thoroughly clean the filters without wasting time or using any elbow grease.
The before and after photos demonstrate just how dirty the filter can become if left for too long.
‘After I’ve taken them out, all I do is pop them in the dishwasher on a hot cycle with a dishwashing tablet – it seriously takes 30 seconds. By the time I’ve finished cleaning the house, the dishwasher has finished and I pop the filters back in – they’re always super clean and sparkling new,’ Barbara said.

‘They hold a lot more grease, grime and gunk than people think, and can get pretty disgusting pretty quickly. It’s a secret filth trap that shouldn’t be ignored,’ she said.
‘There are products from Bunnings that I’ve tried and I’ve also soaked them overnight in all sorts of solutions, but nothing works like the dishwasher.’
Although some cleaning enthusiasts explained online it’s a good idea to check whether your rangehood filters are made of stainless steel or aluminium, as you often cannot place aluminium items in the dishwasher.
