A Chinese doctor has been captured on camera performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a fainted pensioner in a shop amid the epidemic of coronavirus. 

The medic, Dr Luo Xianke, promptly took off his face mask to carry out the procedures after a man in his 80s suddenly had a heart attack in Zhengzhou, Henan Province of central China.

Dr Luo told the press he didn’t think about the potential risk of catching coronavirus.

‘It was too urgent. The only thing I was thinking was to act faster and faster,’ the off-duty medic told Chinese news outlet Dahe Newspaper.

Dr Luo was running errands near the supermarket when he heard someone shouting: ‘A man just passed out in the store!’ 

The medical worker immediately rushed to the shop where the unconscious elderly man was lying on the floor.

The doctor took off his face mask to give the stranger emergency treatment without hesitation when he noticed the man was losing life symptoms.  

The emergency services arrived on the scene shortly after he carried out the first aid procedures.

The elderly man was rushed to hospital after his heartbeats resumed 15 minutes later.

The pensioner was pronounced dead by doctors in the hospital after all rescue efforts failed.     

Dr Luo has been hailed as a hero after the video, filmed by another customer in the shop, was shared on Chinese social media. 

One comment said: ‘How admirable. Doctors like this are a country’s treasures.’

Another one read: ‘He is a hero among us.’

Since the deadly virus spawned in Wuhan late last year, it has killed at least 2,771 people and infected more than 81,300.

Dozens of countries are now battling outbreaks, with South Korea, Italy, Japan and Iran among the worst-affected.
