Duffy: Celebrities and fans express shock over singer revealing she was ‘raped and help captive’

Welsh singer Duffy made a shocking confession on Tuesday to explain why she disappeared from music over the past decade.

In an Instagram post, she revealed she was raped, drugged, and held captive at some point in the past 10 years, which encouraged her to take a break from the spotlight.

“Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it,’ she wrote. “But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”

The news sparked a wave of support from fans and celebrities.

Writer Roxanne Gay shared Duffy’s Instagram post on Twitter and expressed her shock by the news.

“My goodness. I too always wondered where Duffy went. This is so sad. But I am glad she is doing well,” she wrote.

Television personality Rylan Clark-Neal also responded to the news on Twitter by tweeting Duffy’s name with a heart emoji next to it to show support. Call the Midwife actor Stephen McGann also expressed his support for the singer, writing: “You poor, poor woman. what an appalling thing. All the love and gentleness to you, brave stranger.”

Fans online confessed they wondered what happened to the 35-year-old singer given her early success in the music industry.

Duffy gained notoriety worldwide for the release of her single “Mercy”. Her album Rockferry, released later that year, earned the singer a Grammy Award and three Brit Awards.

But in 2011, it was confirmed the singer was taking a hiatus from her music career.

“I’ve always wondered why Duffy disappeared but to hear that this was caused the silence? Heartbreaking,” one fan wrote on Twitter following the news.

Other fans called the post “shocking” and “gut-wrenching” to read, with most saying they stood behind the singer and the progress she’s made to overcome the assault.
